What a bloody, beautiful looking book - not to mention the content. This self-published book is simply, yet delightfully, set out. It is printed in lower-case text. The fine quality paper is gorgeous and has a lovely feel to it. I don't normally fondle the pages - but the paper he has used is very classy. The glossy cover is simple yet very attractive. The book is rather an odd size, being larger than A5, yet still very manageable to handle. Do I sound impressed? Yep. Inspired? Yep.
The content is fabulous. Once you start, you will want to keep reading. Frank has a way of really bringing his characters to Iife. The book is a collection of his most recent stories written in free verse about people, their lives and the sorts of things that they may get up to of an evening. There are 29 actual pieces in the book but one piece - Tuesday Night at Emile's - is a mini verse novel made up of 18 more pieces and is a small book, in itself, within the big book. You have to see it for your self! On-line audience demand called for Frank to continue the tale of these richly, colourful characters. And so, the tale set at Emile's restaurant grew from there. The whole idea for the book is certainly unique and one that only Frank could do well.
Throughout the three-hour open mic section, various readers, (including myself) read from The Book of Evenings by prior invitation from Frank. I was delighted to be asked to read at such a great event. For Frank's feature, he chose to read Tuesday Night at Emite's to a captive audience. Although it was a long piece, you could have heard a pin drop as he mesmerised the crowd with his characters, accents, actions and his passion for his work and for this particular piece.
One of Frank's first public readings was at The Dan many years ago. He has been a feature reader there (and at many other venues) on many occasions since. Frank has won numerous awards and prizes in his writing life so far and is destined for great things. The launch was definitely a huge success.
